This week, I have been trying to teach myself how to play Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. Just like with the first song I chose, I know this one very well as it happens to be my favourite band. I was really excited to start this one as it also happens to be my father’s favourite band and I wanted to be able to play this for him!
When I first started learning this song, it was hard to remember all of the chords as it has six different ones: Am, A, Em, C, G, and D. I think it was good that I started with Chasing Cars as it already taught me two of the chords in this song. The chords I am having troubles with is G and Em as they are hard to transition into. I find that chords that include 3 fingers are especially hard for me as I have never played an instrument with strings before. The other trouble I’m having/noticing is that my fingers are starting to become very sensitive to the strong because I am practicing every day and it is sometimes painful to play.
I think one thing I have noticed that is positive is that muscle memory is starting to stick and it is easier to transition from one chord to another. This definitely makes me feel accomplished and gives me the realization that I am improving in music!!
What I need to work on is trying to transition better from one chord to another. I have been trying to practice by playing a chord I find hard and then transitioning to an easier one I am more familiar with.
I am excited to start trying to play Hey Jude by the Beatles.
