As I first got my ukulele, I decided to make a plan of how to teach myself to play the three songs I wanted to learn. I went through the songs and the chords they use and drew them out on a piece of paper to practice them. They are drawn out in a way that shows where the fingers should be and labeled so that I get used to seeing only the name and not how to play the chord.
I started with the song I thought would be easiest: Chasing Cars. The reason I thought this might be easier than the other is that it only uses 3 chords, A, D, and Am7 (I don’t quite know the exact name for this chord).
After a couple of watches of the youtube video, I became familiar with the beat of the song (it definitely helped that the songs I chose are ones I listen to often) and started to play along with the video.
I think what sets this song apart from the others I chose is that there is a certain plucking that you do in the beginning of the song. As I first started to try and play it this way, it was hard to hand-eye coordinate how to do this, but I found in a couple of tries, I got it down.
I think the main thing I have to practice is actually getting myself to sit down every single day for 10 minutes and practicing the ukulele. Other than this, I believe I made some good progress with this song!
